47. Announcing the Hour for the Work of God

It will be the abbot’s duty to signal the time for the Work of God, day and night. Either he is to give the signal, or he may assign this duty to a careful brother, so that all things may be carried out at the proper times.

Then, let those designated intone the psalms or antiphons after the abbot in seniority.

On the other hand, let no one presume to sing or read unless he is able to fulfill that office by edifying the hearers. 4 And let it be done with humility, gravity, and trembling—again, by those whom the abbot has designated.
