8. The Divine Office at Night
During the wintertime, that is from the first of November until Easter, the brothers should rise at the eighth hour, as this seems reasonable, 2 so that, having rested till somewhat past midnight, they might rise with everything already digested.
3 The brothers who still have some of the Psalter or readings to learn should devote themselves to study during the time that remains after Vigils.
4 Then from Easter till the first of November, let the hour be adjusted so that after a short interval – during which the brothers may leave the oratory as nature demands – Matins, which should take place at the first light, may follow without delay.
