Experiment
Below are just a few tools that might be helpful in implementing open pedagogy. These and others are explored in OEN’s Learning Circles Tool Documentation.
Flip (Previously Flipgrid)
Flip is an app that allows educators to create safe, online groups where students can express themselves in multiple kinds of media – video, text, or audio.
H5P
H5P allows you to create, share, and reuse interactive HTML5 content in your browser. In the case of open pedagogy, it is often used to create HTML5 interactive formative assessments. Not all of the H5P content types are accessibile, but H5P has a help article that tracks which content types are and aren’t accessible.
Hypothes.is
Hypothes.is a social annotation tool that allows users to annotate the web anywhere. It is very commonly used in open pedagogy experiences with students throughout higher education.
Mentimeter
Mentimeter allows users to build out presentations with interactive polls, quizzes, and word clouds with ease to help drive participation and engagement when presenting. They offer tiered pricing options, including a Free option. (They also offer special pricing for educators.) With the free option you can create unlimited presentations with up to 2 question slides and up to 5 quiz slides to an unlimited amount of audience members. It’s also worth checking to see if your institution has an Enterprise level account with Mentimeter.
Padlet
Padlet allows you to create digital whiteboards where students can share and participate anonymously to produce rich and engaging conversation. You can create boards to collect, organize, and present anything.

Reflection Questions
- How does the tool I’m interested in enhance the experience for students?
- Which tools align best with the course assignment I am transitioning to being an open pedagogy assignment?
- What skills will my students need in order to successfully use these tools, and how can I incorporate that skillbuilding into my course?
