Banner: Compatibility

As you become familiar with CC licenses, you will likely notice that not all licenses work together. As some licenses are more open and others are more restrictive, you must check to make sure they are compatible with each other. As you review the graphic below, you’ll notice that CC BY-ND and CC BY-NC-ND are not compatible with any other license or with public domain entities. Licenses with SA attribution will also pose some challenges with NC and ND; SA is generally acceptable with public domain content. The compatibility between public domain and Creative Commons licenses may determine how you remix content for new resources. The checkmark indicates compatibility between licenses, where an X indicates incompatibility.

Public domain, CC0, CC BY are compatible with every license except CC BY NC and CC BY NC ND.  CC BY SA is only compatible with public domain, CC0, CC BY, and CC BY SA  CC BY NC is compatible with public domain, CC0, CC BY, CC BY NC, and CC BY NC SA  CC BY ND is not compatible with any license.  CC BY BA SA is compatible with public domain, cc0, CC BY, CC BY NC, and CC BY NC SA  CC BY NC ND is not compatible with any license.
