Also known as reasoning from analogy.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">anecdote<\/span>: A form of evidence that offers a story or extended example in narrative form.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">antithesis<\/span>: The juxtaposition of contrasting ideas, typically in the same sentence.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">appeal to authority<\/span>: A fallacy produced when the source is not a qualified authority on the topic, does not have firsthand knowledge of the issue, is perceived to have excessive bias, and\/or their assumptions do not match the speaker\u2019s own.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">appeal to common practice<\/span>: A fallacy that occurs when the validity of the claim is based on the commonality or tradition of a belief or activity without any more specific offering of justification.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">appeal to popularity<\/span>: A fallacy that occurs when the validity of the claim is based on its popularity alone without any more specific offering of proof.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">appearance<\/span>: How a speaker looks while speaking.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">appreciative listening<\/span>: An attitude that allows for the enjoyment of a presentation, its aesthetics, and its style.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">approach<\/span>: In deliberation, this is a broad category of similar opinions on how to address a wicked problem, typically gathered around a shared logic and value.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">argument<\/span>: The advocacy of a belief, attitude, or course of action that is supported by evidence.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">articulation<\/span>: When a speaker says each word with clarity.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">assertion<\/span>: A claim that lacks an evidentiary basis and is offered without reason, support, or data.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">attitude:<\/span> A feeling or moral judgment about what is good or bad, right or wrong.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">audience adaptation<\/span>: Ways a speaker alters their speech, using audience<ins> <\/ins>analysis cues, to better achieve their speaking goals.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">audience analysis<\/span>: The practice of assessing factors that are likely to influence an audience\u2019s reception of a message.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">audience-interactive visual aids<\/span>: Visual aids that rely on the audience\u2019s input in real time to produce imagery.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">authority<\/span>: The expertise, power, or recognized knowledge a source has concerning a topic.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">average<\/span>: A type of statistic that seeks to numerically represent what is typical or common. An average may be calculated in terms of the mean, median, or mode.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">background<\/span>: Everything the audience can see behind or around a speaker within the camera\u2019s frame when they are speaking through a camera lens.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">balance<\/span>: In speech outlining, this dictates that each main idea receives roughly the same amount of time and attention in the speech.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">begging the question<\/span>: This fallacy occurs when the speaker fails to provide evidence for their claim and, instead, restates the claim in place of additional data. Also known as circular reasoning.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">belief<\/span>: An audience\u2019s conclusion about, or confidence in, what is or is not true or real.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">bias<\/span>: A predetermined commitment to a particular ideological or political perspective.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">body movement<\/span>: Positioning and motion of a speaker\u2019s body.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">camera angle<\/span>: The slant or viewpoint of the camera on the speaker when speaking through a camera lens.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">camera distance<\/span>: The length of space between a speaker and their camera when speaking through a camera lens.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">camera framing<\/span>: When speaking through a camera lens, this is the edges of what the camera allows the audience to see and what it cuts out from their visibility.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">camera steadiness<\/span>: The motion or stillness of the camera\u2019s frame when a speaker presents through a camera lens.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">captive audience<\/span>: An audience that is required to be in attendance.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">categorical arrangement<\/span>: A linear pattern of arrangement that uses a \u201ccategory\u201d of elements\u2014such as parts, forms, functions, methods, characteristics, perspectives, or qualities of a topic\u2014as its organizing principle.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">causal reasoning<\/span>: A type of reasoning in which a speaker claims an event is caused by a particular circumstance or action. Also known as reasoning from cause.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">cause-effect arrangement<\/span>: A pattern of arrangement that describes an existing situation or condition and then identifies or predicts the effects of that situation or condition.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">certainty<\/span>: In unproductive discourse, the exhibition of sureness about a position without recognizing its weaknesses or drawbacks. Lacks self-reflexivity or room for doubt.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">chronological arrangement<\/span>: A pattern of arrangement that uses time as its organizing principle.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">citation<\/span>: The provision of a source\u2019s basic identifying information.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">civic<\/span>: Those matters that relate to the city or citizens.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">civic engagement<\/span>: Participation in community organizations, institutions, and groups with the goal of contributing to the public good.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">civil speech<\/span>: Communication that maintains decorum by being respectful, dispassionate, and polite.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">claim<\/span>: What a speaker attempts to prove and wants an audience to accept.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">closed question<\/span>: A type of question that prompts a single, one-word answer.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">combativeness<\/span>: In unproductive discourse, the use of aggressive behavior toward other participants and alternative perspectives, such as repeated interrupting, emotionally charged labels and terms, yelling, and personal attacks. Lacks empathy toward other participants and views dissenting opinions as the opposition to be defeated.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">common ground<\/span>: Any perspectives, interests, values, or concerns shared by some or all members of a deliberative discussion.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">communication apprehension<\/span>: The fear or anxiety that arises when a speaker anticipates public speaking.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">community standards<\/span>: Expectations of ethical behavior agreed to implicitly or explicitly by a specific community or organization.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">compiler<\/span>: A service that gathers information from multiple sources and makes it available.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">conclusion<\/span>: A speech\u2019s closing.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">concrete language<\/span>: Words that ground ideas in examples from the physical world.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">context<\/span>: The conditions or situation within which rhetoric is produced.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">contingency<\/span>: A condition in which events and circumstances are dependent on several variables that evolve in unpredictable ways.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">coordination<\/span>: In speech outlining, this is the visual representation of the proper relationship between ideas.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">counterargument<\/span>: A claim or reasoning that opposes a speaker\u2019s own claim.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">counterpublic<\/span>: A gathering of people excluded or dissuaded from the public sphere. Raises issues ignored or trivialized by the broader public.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">course of action<\/span>: An audience\u2019s choice, behavior, or support for specific policies or procedures.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">data<\/span>: Material and reasons supporting the acceptance of a claim. Also called evidence.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">database<\/span>: An organized online storehouse of information that can easily be searched to retrieve desired sources.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">deductive reasoning<\/span>: Reasoning that moves from valid premises to a specific conclusion, often appearing in the classical form of the syllogism.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">deliberation<\/span>: In productive discourse, participants\u2019 critical engagement of arguments and positions rather than the people themselves. Participants seek and accept critique. They consider multiple solutions rather than a singular focus. In moderated discussions, this consists of a deliberative presentation of a problem and multiple options and a subsequent deliberative discussion of those options. Also referred to as the deliberative process.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">deliberative discussion<\/span>: A group conversation through which a community, guided by one or more moderators, examines a complex public problem and range of available solutions to ultimately arrive at a choice or conclusion.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">deliberative framing<\/span>: The naming or defining of an issue in a way all parties can agree upon and that encourages the fair and direct comparison of approaches.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">deliberative presentation<\/span>: A speech that strives to fairly and evenhandedly describe a civic problem and multiple approaches to solving the problem. Emphasis is placed on the benefits and drawbacks of each approach.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">deliberative process<\/span>: A deliberative presentation of a problem and multiple options and a subsequent deliberative discussion of those options. Also referred to as deliberation.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">delivery<\/span>: A speaker\u2019s physical conveyance of words and ideas, both vocally and nonverbally, to an audience.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">demagogue<\/span>: A person who employs demagoguery.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">demagoguery<\/span>: Rhetoric that explicitly claims to speak for the public\u2019s best interests but implicitly gains more political power for the speaker and exacerbates divisions among the public, thereby weakening democracy.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">democracy<\/span>: A political system that locates control and power in the people.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">democratic participant<\/span>: A person who participates in public conversations about issues in a democratic society.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">democratic principles<\/span>: Behavioral standards necessary for democratic governance to exist and thrive.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">demographic factors<\/span>: Personal characteristics that are likely to shape an audience\u2019s views and perspectives on a topic.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">description<\/span>: Noticing, identifying, and explaining a rhetorical artifact\u2019s content, form, and absence when engaging in rhetorical criticism.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">dichotomous thinking<\/span>: In unproductive discourse, debate between two (and only two) diametrically opposed and extreme positions instead of exploring additional perspectives or middle ground.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">direct audience<\/span>: The people who are exposed to and attend to a speech.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">direct questions<\/span>: Questions that target one individual and should be used sparingly to draw out timid group members.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">discrete audience<\/span>: An audience that is finite in number, typically limited to those individuals who show up for the speaking event at a particular day and time.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">dishonest framing<\/span>: The persuasive use of language that manipulates facts and promotes disinformation.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">disinformation<\/span>: The deliberate attempt to spread wrong information to mislead listeners.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">dispersed audience<\/span>: An audience that is unlimited by location and\/or time.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">distrust<\/span>: In unproductive discourse, the suspicion of other participants\u2019 motives or goals. The presumption that they have a hidden agenda and thus a lack of faith in the honesty or authenticity of what they say.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">division<\/span>: In unproductive discourse, this refers to when speakers highlight and accentuate differences with other participants and their positions.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">dogmatism<\/span>: In unproductive discourse, the expression of familiar and even predictable talking points. Entrenched, predetermined positions.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">dominantly situated positionality<\/span>: A knower that does not occupy a position of social oppression (i.e., one that enjoys social privilege and power). They likely know <span style=\"border: none windowtext 0pt; padding: 0;\"><em class=\"import-i\">less<\/em><\/span> about oppression because they don\u2019t likely experience it.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">empathetic listening<\/span>: Listening that seeks to see the message and point from the speaker\u2019s perspective. It adopts a sense of care and responsibility that extends beyond self-interest.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">empowerment<\/span>: In productive discourse and persuasive speaking, the enablement of people to do something positive and effective for the community.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">enthymeme<\/span>: An informal, incomplete syllogism in which a speaker relies on the audience to use its knowledge and experience to supply missing information that completes the argument.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">enunciation<\/span>: A speaker\u2019s fullness of articulation (or lack thereof).<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">environmental factors<\/span>: Elements of the speaking situation such as time of day, size of audience, and communication medium.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">ethical code<\/span>: A set of rules or guidelines agreed to by a culture or group to regulate behavior.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">ethical language<\/span>: Language that recognizes the value and humanity of others by using accurate language and recognizing one\u2019s identity.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">ethical listener<\/span>: An audience member who demonstrates responsibility to the speaker and to the society in which they live through how they listen.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">ethical listening attitude<\/span>: A positive disposition in which an audience member approaches discourse with an open mind and without fixed opinions.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">ethical research<\/span>: Research that utilizes proper practices for locating, using, evaluating, and citing research and sources.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">ethics<\/span>: A set of moral principles governing human conduct as it pertains to motives, ends, and the quality of one\u2019s actions.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">ethnocentrism<\/span>: The belief that one\u2019s own culture is superior to others.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">ethos<\/span>: An audience\u2019s perceptions of a speaker\u2019s public character or persona; what we commonly call credibility.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">evaluation<\/span>: In rhetorical criticism, making judgments about the functions and consequences of the rhetoric examined.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">evaluative listening<\/span>: Also called critical listening, it means thinking critically about a speech\u2019s content and testing its claims in order to form judgments about its ideas.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">evidence<\/span>: Data and backing in the form of examples, statistics, and testimony used to support a claim.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">example<\/span>: A type of evidence that provides a concrete instance in the form of a fact or occurrence.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">extemporaneous delivery<\/span>: A speaker\u2019s use of trimmed-down notes to recall the speech\u2019s structure, key ideas, and any direct quotations or source citations.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">eye contact<\/span>: This occurs when a speaker looks into the eyes of audience members.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">facial expressions<\/span>: A speaker\u2019s use of their face to communicate emotions or reactions to an audience.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">fair use<\/span>: A legal doctrine that allows copyrighted material to be used without explicit permission, based on four factors: the purpose and character of use, the amount of substantiality of use compared with the work as a whole, the nature of the copyrighted work, and the effect on the potential market for sale or value of the copyrighted material.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">fallacy<\/span>: A flaw or defect in reasoning that undermines argument validity.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">false dilemma<\/span>: A fallacy that occurs when it is suggested that there are only two conclusions available although in reality other possibilities or options exist.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">familiarity<\/span>: The degree to which an audience already knows or is ignorant about the speaker and topic.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">faulty analogy<\/span>: A fallacy that occurs when an argument rests upon comparing two situations that possess more differences than similarities and are not reasonably comparable.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">faulty cause<\/span>: A fallacy that occurs when there is a faulty attribution of cause and effect. Also called post hoc.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">framing<\/span>: The use of language to order and make sense of the world.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">freemium<\/span>: Visual aid software that allows users to freely use a few basic features but requires payment to access more sophisticated or advanced tools.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">gender-neutral language<\/span>: Words that do not specify a particular gender.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">gestures<\/span>: Movement of a speaker\u2019s hands.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">groan zone<\/span>: During a deliberative discussion, this is a stage of confusion and frustration that results from the broad representation of viewpoints, opinions, and ideas shared.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">groupthink<\/span>: A phenomenon that occurs when members\u2019 desire for harmony outweighs their willingness to critically examine alternative perspectives.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">hallucinate<\/span>: When artificial intelligence makes up something (such as a source) that does not exist.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">hasty generalization<\/span>: A fallacy that occurs when the examples used to support a claim are not representative or sufficient in number.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">hegemonic ideology<\/span>: An ideology that has become a predominant way of seeing the world and serves the interests of those who hold institutional or social power.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">heuristics<\/span>: Specific strategies for generating new ideas when writing a speech.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">hierarchical communication<\/span>: In unproductive discourse, communication from the \u201ctop\u201d decision-makers (officials, leaders, spokespersons, or experts) down, which subjugates everyday individuals\u2019 preferences or insights.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"hanging-indent\"><span class=\"import-gt\">hierarchy<\/span>: An unequal
